De Beers has reported that as markets are showing signs of recovery, it is canceling its earlier plans of shutting down operations at its Snap Lake underground mine for four weeks in December. The mine has been victim to the economic slowdown, as the lowered demand for rough diamonds last year resulted in lower output and cuts in employee and contractor jobs. %% Now that the mining company is citing some improvement in rough diamond demand in the Asian markets, it decided to continue operations at the mine. The Snap Lake underground mine is located in Canada. De Beers had been curbing its operations around the world in the backdrop of the economic slowdown, but is now open to keeping its operations functional, as the markets are assuring of a comeback in rough demand. Similar to De Beers, other mining giants like Alrosa and Rio Tinto are considering continuing operations at their mines which otherwise would be closed for sometime had the economic slowdown continued.
