The agreements mark a significant step towards deeper collaboration between the two nations, focusing on trade expansion, knowledge sharing, and innovation.

A high-profile Indian delegation comprising 18 members from the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), Jewellers Association Jaipur, and Sitapura Gems and Jewellery Industry Association visited Thailand from February 22 to 24. The delegation engaged in strategic discussions and collaborative initiatives aimed at bolstering bilateral ties.

Key Agreements Signed

The MoUs, signed on February 22 during the BGJF opening ceremony, were attended by prominent industry figures from both nations. The agreements include:

  • GJEPC’s Indian Institute of Gems and Jewellery Research and Laboratories Centre (IIGJ-RLC) with GIT Thailand: This partnership focuses on gemstone standardization, joint research, and enhanced knowledge exchange to boost transparency and excellence in the industry.

  • Jewellers Association Jaipur with Chanthaburi Gem and Jewellery Traders Association: Aimed at strengthening the coloured gemstone trade, this collaboration will foster expanded trade opportunities and global market participation.

  • Sitapura Gems and Jewellery Industry Association (SGJIA) with Thai Silver Exporters Association (TSEA): This agreement seeks to drive innovation, enhance design excellence, and expand market reach for silver jewellery.

Industry Leaders Speak on Collaboration

Dr. Nawal Agarwal, Chairman of IIGJ Jaipur and Director of IIGJ-RLC, emphasized the importance of the MoU with GIT Thailand, stating, “This partnership ensures higher levels of trust and transparency in the global gem and jewellery industry. By harmonizing gemstone standardization and fostering joint research, India and Thailand are paving the way for future advancements.” He also extended an invitation to Thai associations to participate in the upcoming International Gem & Jewellery Show (Saudijex) in Jeddah this September.

Alok Sonkhia, President of Jewellers Association Jaipur, highlighted the importance of the agreement with Chanthaburi Gem & Jewelry Traders Association, stating, “This collaboration will open new avenues for knowledge exchange, trade expansion, and joint participation in global events, strengthening the coloured gemstone trade between both nations.”

Arvind Gupta, President of Sitapura Gems and Jewellery Industry Association, echoed similar sentiments, remarking, “The partnership with TSEA will create new business opportunities for artisans and exporters, further elevating the global prominence of silver jewellery.”

Strengthening Trade and Technological Synergies

The delegation engaged in key meetings with leading Thai institutions, including the Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand (GIT), a public organization under Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce. Discussions centered on streamlining laboratory processes, achieving mutual certification recognition, developing joint skill enhancement courses, and facilitating student and faculty exchanges. These initiatives are expected to raise professional standards and promote international best practices in the industry.

Meetings with the Thai Gem and Jewellery Traders Association (TGJTA) focused on gemstone sourcing platforms, promoting the coloured gemstone trade, and leveraging technology to bridge trade between both nations. Similarly, discussions with the Thai Silver Exporters Association (TSEA) explored joint manufacturing ventures, technology transfer, and innovative design collaborations.

Another major highlight of the visit was the mutual interest in trade fair participation. The Indian delegation extended an invitation for Thailand to showcase a dedicated pavilion at India’s leading gem and jewellery exhibitions, including the IIJS Mumbai, JAS, and JAGS Jaipur, further strengthening cross-border business interactions.

A New Era of Bilateral Cooperation

The visit follows a recent high-level Thai delegation, led by GIT, to Jaipur in November 2024, underscoring the growing collaboration between India and Thailand. These ongoing efforts are set to redefine the global gem and jewellery industry by unlocking vast opportunities for trade, technology exchange, and market expansion.

As both nations continue to deepen their engagement, the future looks promising for Indian and Thai businesses, artisans, and traders, positioning them as dominant players in the international gem and jewellery market.
