he Bureau of Indian Standards has raised the hallmarking fee for gold jewellery to Rs 75 per article from Rs 45, increasing the compliance cost for jewellers while retaining the silver fee at Rs 35.
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has increased the hallmarking fee for gold articles to Rs 75 per article from Rs 45, with immediate effect. The revised fee comes ahead of the festive season, when jewellery demand typically increases.
Under the amended norms, jewellers will pay Rs 75 per gold article to recognised Assaying and Hallmarking Centres, subject to a minimum charge of Rs 200 per consignment. The fee for silver articles remains unchanged at Rs 35 per article, with a minimum charge of Rs 150 per consignment.
Hallmarking is the process through which BIS verifies the purity of precious-metal articles. The revised charges therefore increase the per-article compliance cost for gold jewellery businesses, while the applicable fee for silver remains unchanged.
The change comes as the jewellery trade enters the festive buying period, with jewellers preparing for higher consumer activity and inventory movement.
The revised gold hallmarking fee represents an increase of Rs 30 per article, or about 66.7%, over the earlier charge of Rs 45.
