With gold prices at record highs, Platinum Guild International (PGI) is spotlighting platinum as the jewellery industry’s next big growth opportunity at this year’s Jewellery & Gem WORLD Hong Kong (JGW).
The global trade fair, running from 17–21 September at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre, will feature a trio of platinum-focused initiatives including a high-profile panel discussion, a precious metal exhibition, and PGI’s signature Platinum Pavilion.
Platinum’s inherent strength, resilience, sustainable sourcing, and cutting-edge applications have positioned it as a compelling alternative to gold. Traditionally dominant in bridal jewellery, the metal is now expanding into new categories — particularly men’s jewellery — creating fresh opportunities for retailers and manufacturers.
The centrepiece of PGI’s participation is a panel titled “The Platinum Advantage: Markets, Business and Innovations”, moderated by PGI CEO Tim Schlick. Scheduled for 19 September, the session brings together experts from China, the USA, Japan, Australia, Southeast Asia, and India to discuss platinum’s competitive edge over white gold, strategies to capture emerging markets, and the role of technology in driving innovation. Speakers include Andy Zhou (Kingli Jewelry, China), Josh Helmich (Helmich Luxury Group, USA), Jason Brimelow (Brimelow Group, Australia & Southeast Asia), Noriyuki Kamei (Kuwayama Corporation, Japan), and Avinash Pahuja (ORO Precious Metals, India).
“Technological advancements are unfolding at an unprecedented pace, giving platinum manufacturers and designers unique opportunities,” said Schlick. “In fact, we’ve seen more innovation in platinum over the past two years than in the previous two decades. Platinum is the rarest, purest metal with strong ethical credibility — making it especially appealing to younger consumers who value provenance and modernity.”
Complementing the panel, PGI is co-presenting “Sublime Shine: Metal Innovation in the Art of Jewellery”, a 430-square-metre exhibition that highlights platinum’s role in jewellery, clean energy, and medicine. The display also includes a dedicated section on men’s jewellery, underscoring the metal’s expanding versatility.
The popular Platinum Pavilion returns this year with exhibitors from China and India, including B.N. Jewellers India, Jewelex India, Guangdong Jinbotong Technology, Kingli Jewelry, Kinch Jewelry, and ORO Precious Metals. Other global players such as Kuwayama Corporation, Nagahori Corporation, Shenzhen Longjia Jewelry, and German firms egf – Eduard G. Fidel and Schofer Germany will also present their latest platinum innovations.
To round out the programme, PGI will host a networking reception on 19 September, providing an informal platform for industry leaders to connect and explore collaborative opportunities.
By aligning its new global positioning with themes of substance, sophistication, provenance, and purity, PGI is positioning platinum as not just a timeless choice but also the metal of the future.
